Changes in the Neighborhood:
There are some changes taking place in the neighborhood around Bay Records. First, the bad news: Spud’s Pizza is closing it’s doors. Having good, reasonable food within walking distance is always helpful for a studio. Being able to grab a bite on a meal break is important. There are still other places nearby, but Spud’s was particularly convenient. The good news, however, is really good news. We’re having a mural painted on the side of the building. Those of you who have seen the Bay Records building know that there is a large blank (usually) white wall on the Ellis street side. I’ve had thoughts over the years of having a mural painted on it, but haven’t, due to cost, finding the right artists, etc. But now it’s happening, thanks to an organization called Youth Spirit Artworks, located only a few doors up the street from us. Under the direction of Sally Hindman, YSA works with youth within the community to produce art in the community. Instead of bringing in outside artists to, say, paint a mural, they work with young people who live near the mural to do it. You can check them out at http://www.youthspiritartworks.org/ The theme of the mural will be the arts, particularly music, and will represent artists of many different types and ethnicities with an accent on artists in the community. It will be finished by late August will go a long way towards jazzing up the building and the neighborhood.
